Why Everything Still Comes Back to You (Even With Managers)

You added a management layer. That was the right move.

You add managers because the business needs more capacity. More hands, more coverage, more ability to deliver without everything sitting on you. On paper, adding a management layer is exactly the right move, and it’s the moment most businesses grow through.

So why does everything still come back to you?

Something quietly changes in how the business runs. Decisions still come to you, but they arrive later, in worse shape, and sometimes they don’t arrive at all until you find out a manager softened the standard you built. It looks like nothing has moved. But everything has moved: the business now runs on other people’s interpretations of what you’d want, and those interpretations are only as sharp as what you’ve made explicit.

A management layer only works when it adds capability, not another step

That capability comes from two things you can’t outsource. The first is the levels of decision authority your people are actually operating with: what they can decide alone, what they should bring to you, what they should escalate immediately. The second is the principles of the business you’ve named and separated from your personal preferences. A manager can only carry what you’ve made clear.

It’s rarely because the manager is weak

The instinct when things keep coming back is to look at the person. But the manager you brought on is usually operating on their best read of what you’d want, without the two things above ever having been spelled out. It’s what you’ve made clear, and what you haven’t.
